Biographical/Historical Note
Mena, Arkansas, the county seat of Polk County, was a railroad town that was incorporated in September 1896, just one month after the first train stopped in Mena. Mena was on the route of the Kansas City, Pittsburg, and Gulf Railroad that went from Kansas City, Missouri, to Port Arthur, Texas. The “High School Yell” was the yearbook for Mena Normal High School, published by the students and printed by Star Print of Mena, Arkansas. The Normal School was run in connection with the high school in Mena; however, newspapers report that some Mena citizens were afraid that the Normal School would do away with the high school altogether. Normal Schools were created to train teachers by educating them in Methods, Pedagogy, and Psychology. Mena Normal High School was opened on September 25, 1911.
