Biographical/Historical Note
The Hickman/New Dora Cemetery is a fifteen-acre area comprised of the Hickman Cemetery and the New Dora Cemetery, located in McAlmont, Pulaski County, Arkansas. The dual cemetery is one of the largest black cemeteries in Pulaski County. Hickman Cemetery was established in 1903 and is comprised of over ten acres. Hickman Cemetery, formerly the Colored Farmers Association Cemetery and later the Hickman Memorial Gardens, contains over six thousand interments. The smaller New Dora Cemetery is approximately five acres, was established in 1917 but the number of interments is unknown. Both cemeteries have headstones dating to the early 1900s. This once-prominent burial site fell into disarray in the latter part of the 20th century. The Hickman/New Dora Cemetery Preservation Association formed in 2006 to research, clean up, document, and preserve the cemetery. The association received a Curtis H. Sykes Memorial grant from the Black History Commission of Arkansas. The Black History Commissioner of Arkansas (BHCA) was created by Act 1233 of 1991 and is composed of seven members appointed by the governor with approval of the Senate. The BHCA is charged with preserving the history of black Arkansans and black communities in Arkansas. This commission also encourages research of Arkansas’ black history and promotes teaching black history in Arkansas schools. Grants are awarded from the BHCA in a concerted effort to ensure Arkansas’ black history is collected and preserved. The Curtis H. Sykes Memorial Grant Program was established in 2009 by Act 660 to honor the program’s namesake who served as chair of the commission from 1993-2007.
