Biographical/Historical Note

William Minor Quesenbury (1822-1888), also known as Bill Cush, was a journalist, newspaper founder and editor, a painter, poet, and soldier. He wrote for local newspapers in Van Buren and would eventually founded and edited the South-West Independent in 1853-1857. As an artist and writer, he travelled through the Indian Territory and northwest Arkansas, Texas, and California, keeping paintings, diaries, and sketchbooks from his travels. In 1860, during the gubernatorial election, he made satirical woodcuts of the candidates, which were reprinted by the Arkansas State Gazette and out-of-state newspapers.
