This broadside is a campaign ad taken out by the Pulaski County Friends of Bill Fulbright for United States Senator.

Biographical/Historical Note

James William Fulbright was born in Summer, Missouri to Jay and Roberta Fulbright on April 9, 1905 and grew up in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He graduated from the University of Arkansas (U of A) in 1925 after which he was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to attend Oxford University in England. He earned two degrees from Oxford by 1931, then moved back to the states and enrolled in George Washington University where he received his law degree. At the age of thirty-four he became the youngest college head in the United States when he was named president of the U of A. Homer Adkins was opposed to Fulbright’s appointment as U of A president. Homer Adkins served two terms (1919-1923) as Sheriff and Collector of Pulaski County. In 1933 he was appointed collector for the Federal Internal Revenue at Little Rock. He held this position until 1940, when he resigned to run for governor. He was elected to serve as governor in 1940 and again in 1942. After Adkins was elected to the governorship, he appointed the Board of Trustees for U of A and had Fulbright removed as president in 1941. Governor Adkins waged a vigorous but unsuccessful campaign for the United States Senate in 1944 against James Fulbright.
