Description

This collection contains one broadside, a message from Huey P. Long in support of Senator Hattie W. Caraway's election campaign: "A Letter from Uncle Trusty - Why the Financial Masters Oppose Senator Caraway."

Biographical/Historical Note

Huey Pierce Long Jr. (August 30, 1893-September 10, 1935) was governor of Louisiana from 1928-1932 and a United States Senator from 1932-1935 until he was assassinated by Carl Weiss. He campaigned for Hattie Wyatt Caraway (February 1, 1878-December 21, 1950), who became the first woman elected to serve a full term as a United States Senator and the first to be re-elected. Caraway was a prohibitionist, voted against anti-lynching legislation, and supported the New Deal. She insisted that she was to be a senator in her own right, not simply as a temporary stand-in for a man.
