James Washington Cooper was born May 25, 1842, near Shelbyville, Bedford County, Tennessee. He served in Hays Company, Walker’s Regiment, Arkansas state troops and Company F, Fifteenth Arkansas Regiment, Confederate States Army, during the Civil War.
