Description
This collection contains correspondence regrading employment, supplies, surveys, arrest of J.J. Fiske, receipts, statements, and a telephone system designed for the Interurban railway from the Little Rock and Pine Bluff Traction Company.
Biographical/Historical Note
The Little Rock and Pine Bluff Traction Company planned to build an interurban, a type of electric trolley system, between Little Rock and Pine Bluff, Arkansas. The interurban system appeared to offer a low cost solution to American’s transportation problems in the early 20th century. The electric railcars had low construction and operating costs with less need for multiple personnel on the car. However, Arkansas was unable to gather enough outside financial support for the interurban system to develop. The short-lived Little Rock and Pine Bluff Traction Company completed only five miles of the graded track. J.J. Fiske (a.k.a. C.E. Coon) served as president, and W.H. Waugh was chief engineer. J.J. Fiske left Little Rock after several investors found that he had a criminal record.
