This diploma awarded the title of Mistress of English Literature to Mary A.V. Daly from the Female Collegiate Institute of Buckingham County, Virginia.
Biographical/Historical Note
Female Collegiate Institute of Buckingham County, Virginia, was the first chartered women's college in Virginia. It was established in 1837, but its doors were closed in 1843. After several petitions from current and former students, the college was reopened in 1848 but closed permanently in 1863.
