The collection contains an application for a pardon for John J. Hughes, Sr., family correspondence, and political material concerning the Hughes family of Lee County.
Biographical/Historical Note
John J. Hughes, Sr., was born in Lee County, Arkansas, in 1859. He married Martha Elizabeth Hamner in the 1880s. Hughes became one of the wealthiest farmers and businessmen in Lee County. He owned several large farms and was president of the Bank of Haynes and the Bank of Hughes. In 1911, Hughes killed a man during an altercation in Memphis, Tennessee. He was sentenced to life in prison, but was pardoned after serving only a few months. Hughes died March 14, 1920, at his home in Haynes, Arkansas. John J. Hughes, Jr., was born to John J. Hughes, Sr., and Martha Hamner Hughes in 1888. He married Pearl Robinson in 1912. John Hughes, Jr., served in the Arkansas House and Senate in the late 1920s. He died January 18, 1954.
