This tax receipt was issued to John Henry by Crawford County, Arkansas.
Biographical/Historical Note
John Henry was born in 1806 in Massachusetts, and was one of the early settlers of Van Buren, Crawford County, Arkansas. He was a friend of Sam Houston of Texas, and conducted business with him for a few years. He also opened mercantile businesses with Edward Cunningham and D.C. Williams. On August21, 1838, he married Adaline Parks of Franklin County. That same year, he sold stock for the Van Buren and Fayetteville Turnpike Company. In 1840, he acted as director of a bank, which he opened with John Drennen and George C. Pickett. At the beginning of the Civil War, Henry moved to New Orleans, where he went into business with Brown Taylor. He died February 19, 1891, in New Orleans.
