Biographical/Historical Note
Thomas Harry Barton came to El Dorado during south Arkansas's oil boom and began investing in the industry there. In 1922, he acquired a small refinery that served as the beginning of the Lion Oil Refining Company. The company quickly became one of the state's largest oil producers and refiners. Lion Oil expanded its operations, and the company's service stations became common features along roadsides in the South. By the mid-1950s, nearly 2,000 service stations were in operation across the region.
