Biographical/Historical Note
The first public schools opened in Crawford County, Arkansas, on February 15, 1869, when 200 students enrolled for classes at Van Buren Academy and Free School. In order to run public institutions, the state used local property taxes as revenue. The National Defense Education Act (NDEA) of 1958 is federal legislation that provides funding to improve schools that promote post-secondary education. Crawford County schools used this funding to supplement equipment and books needed for classrooms. The county also used funding from the Equalizing Transportation Aid that was credited to the overall operating funds.
