Biographical/Historical Note

William Howard Reed (1883-1942) was an Arkansas politician in the early twentieth century. A Democrat, he held office in the Arkansas House of Representatives from 1919-1925. Reed served as Speaker of the Arkansas House in 1921-1925. Selected as state comptroller in 1927, Reed was removed from his position by political rival, Governor Junius Marion Futrell, who was said to object to Reed's refusal to withdraw from the 1932 Arkansas gubernatorial race. Reed ran in 1932, 1934, and 1936. In all his campaigns, his daughter, Bernice Reed Eison (1907-1982), traveled speaking on his behalf. Following his unsuccessful campaigns for governor, Reed was appointed director of Arkansas' Historical Records' Survey in 1936. Reed married Eva May Massingale (1886-1973) on June 20, 1906. They had five children: Anna Bernice Reed Eison (1907-1982), Hilma Reed (1909-1992), Troy Reed (1914-1993), Ralph Reed (1916-1970), and Marion Reed Biddle (1919- 1997). Howard Reed died of a heart attack on November 16, 1942, at the age of 59.
