Biographical/Historical Note

Benjamin Oliver Lewis was born to John Lewis and Anna Nancy Oliver on December 1, 1819, in North Carolina. His early life was spent in North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, and finally Georgia, where the family settled in Gilmer County, around 1840. He worked as a farmer and blacksmith during his lifetime. Benjamin Lewis married Mary Diamia Roberson in Murray County, Georgia, on August 1, 1843. Mary was born in Georgia on October 15, 1826. They moved to White Oak, Franklin County, Arkansas, sometime between 1850 and 1860. Then between 1860 and 1870 they moved to Johnson County, Arkansas, where they remained the rest of their lives. Benjamin died in Yell County, Arkansas, on October 31, 1899; and Mary passed away in June 1909.
