The Spanish-American war was fought from April 21, 1898, to August 13, 1898, between Spain and the United States. Spain was already fighting against Cuban revolutionaries seeking independence, which started to attract American attention in support of Cuba, and after the American warship USS Maine was sunk in Havana harbor, Spain was blamed for the explosion and the United States entered the war on the side of Cuba.
