Description

This collection contains an address "to the public," by Sylvanus Phillips of Helena, concerning Robert Crittenden, along with letters of Crittenden and Able Knowlton.

Biographical/Historical Note

Colonel Sylvanus Phillips (1765-1830) arrived in Arkansas around 1797 and worked with fellow land speculator William Russell to create a new town site. When a new county was formed in the area in 1820, it was named Phillips County in his honor, and the town of Helena, incorporated 1833, was named for his daughter. Robert Crittenden (1797-1834) was the first secretary of the Arkansas Territory between 1819-1829 and acting governor of the Arkansas Territory between July-December 1829. In 1827, he came into conflict with Henry Conway over political issues and killed him in a duel. Crittenden died on December 18, 1834 while arguing a legal case.
