Biographical/Historical Note

Jeff Davis was born May 6, 1862, in Little River County, Arkansas. He studied law at Vanderbilt University and served as governor of Arkansas from 1901-1907. He then went on to become a United States senator from 1907-1912. Davis died January 3, 1913, only a few months after his re-election to the senate. James Kimbrough Jones (1839-1908) was born on September 29, 1839, in Marshall County, Mississippi, to Nat Jones and Caroline Jane Jones. Jones ran for the Arkansas state Senate from Hempstead County and won in 1874 and was reelected twice. He served as the president of the Arkansas Senate in 1877. In 1880 he ran successfully for United States Congress and won, serving Arkansas’s second Congressional District, a position he held until 1885. He tendered his resignation and won an election to serve as United States Senator from Arkansas, a position he held from 1885 until 1903. In 1896 and 1900 he was elected chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Davis involved himself in the senate race between Jones and his opponent James Clarke in 1902, breaking the unwritten party rule in Arkansas about mixing gubernatorial and senatorial races.
