Description
This collection contains the petition requesting Griffith to represent Sebastian County at the secession convention and his reply.
Biographical/Historical Note
In January 1861 Governor Henry M. Rector, at the direction of the General Assembly, called an election to determine whether Arkansas should hold a convention to consider secession. Concurrently, voters were to elect delegates to the convention should the vote be favorable. Samuel Griffith announced his candidacy for the Session Convention, seeking to represent the people of Sebastian County. Despite being a farmer that owned twenty-nine slaves, Griffith believed that the North was ready to “cast aside the Holy Bible” in order to end slavery. However, Griffith supported the Federal Government in the convention and voted against session in order to preserve the Union between the United States.
