Description
This collection contains one broadside, a circular by John M. Thayer (Brigadier General Commanding, Headquarters, District of the Frontier, Fort Smith) prohibiting "promiscuous discharge of fire-arms about the town and camps."
Biographical/Historical Note
John Milton Thayer (1820-1906) was a general in the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War and was a governor of Nebraska after the war. He commanded the District of the Frontier in Fort Smith, participated in the Camden Expedition, and fought at the Battle of Jenkin's Ferry.
