Letter from Robert E. Lee, then president of Washington College, Lexington, Virginia, to Arkansas planter and businessman Thomas W. Steele concerning academic program and scholarship offer at the school.

Biographical/Historical Note

The writer of the letter, Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870), headed Washington College in Lexington, Virginia, following his service as commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A. in the Civil War. Arkansas planter and businessman Thomas William Steele (1827-1900), who had likely written Lee on behalf of a young son, was also a C.S.A veteran.
