Biographical/Historical Note
Arkansas Tech University is a public university in Russellville, Arkansas. It was created by Act 100 of 1909 of the Arkansas General Assembly under the name, the Second District Agricultural School. The first classes were held on October 26, 1910. The original purpose of the school was to offer classes leading to a high school degree, but it eventually began offering the first two years of college instruction. In 1925, the school's name was changed to Arkansas Polytechnic College by the General Assembly. By 1931, the high school courses were phased out, and the school only offered courses leading to a college degree. The school changed its name again on July 9, 1976 to Arkansas Tech University. In 2003, Arkansas Tech took over Arkansas Valley Technical Institute in Ozark, Arkansas. The Ozark campus now acts as a satellite campus, offering courses leading to an associate degree.
