Biographical/Historical Note

The Preservation of African American Cemeteries (PAAC) was established in 2003 by co-founders, Phyllis Y. Hammonds of Helena and Tamela Tenpenny-Lewis of Little Rock, Arkansas. The goal of the organization is the preservation of Arkansas’s African American cemeteries. Annual conferences include presentations from archaeologists, historians, genealogists, and cemetery preservationists. In 2007, the cemetery conference schedule changed to the month of May in celebration of Memorial Day. Conferences held in 2003 and 2008 were funded with grants from the Arkansas Humanities Council and the Black History Advisory Committee (now the Black History Commission of Arkansas).
