Biographical/Historical Note
The Preservation of African American Cemeteries (PAAC) was established in 2003 by co-founders, Phyllis Y. Hammonds of Helena and Tamela Tenpenny-Lewis of Little Rock, Arkansas. The goal of the organization is the preservation of Arkansas’s African American cemeteries. PAAC holds annual conferences which are held in the month of May in celebration of Memorial Day, include presentations from archaeologists, historians, genealogists, and cemetery preservationists. The two-day youth mentoring workshop held March 10-11, 2017 entitled, "Our Past, Our Future, Our Communicators: Utilizing Life Skills to Document and Preserve History by Publishing Your Own Story," gave the youth an opportunity to develop knowledge in genealogy and cemetery preservation, and attend a writing workshop to expand their knowledge of publishing.
