Description
This collection contains Civil War reminiscences compiled by Mrs. A.A. Tufts for the H.L. Grimstead Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Camden, Arkansas.
Biographical/Historical Note
Alfred A. Tufts was born on September 3, 1847 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As a youth living in Illinois, Tufts enlisted in Company K, 186th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry at the start of the Civil War. He was mustered out at Pine Bluff, Arkansas, in July 1865. He accepted a government situation in Camden, Arkansas. He served as deputy clerk, county and circuit clerk, and receiver of United States public moneys. He married Nellie D. Scott in February of 1873. Tufts died in 1909.
