Description
This collection contains business and city directories from Arkansas and other states.
Biographical/Historical Note
One of the earliest city directories was printed in 1595 for the city of London, England. City directories were very popular from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century. They were usually compiled by conducting door-to-door surveys. Business and city directories provide information about individuals and businesses. Individual entries usually include address and occupation, but can also include spouse's name, marital status, children's names and birth years, and phone number (in later editions). Race is often included in the entries, as well. Entries are arranged by name and by address. Many directories provide historical background of the city, lists of streets, ward boundaries, public works, and city officials. Surrounding areas are often included. Directories printed during wartime may include lists of local residents who served in the military. Also, directories will often include residents who passed away the previous year.
