Description
This collection contains an agreement by Memphis-Little Rock Railroad and J. K. Apple to pay A.S. Brownlee for clearing land.
Biographical/Historical Note
The Memphis-Little Rock Railroad was the first railroad to operate in the state of Arkansas. It was a 133-mile long railroad that ran from Hopefield (Crittenden County) to Little Rock (Pulaski County). It was constructed between 1854 and 1871. The railroad experienced financial trouble in the late 1800s and was sold at foreclosure four times. It eventually was sold to the Memphis and Choctaw Railroad on October 25, 1898, which was sold to the Choctaw, Oklahoma, and Gulf Railroad Company—nicknamed the Choctaw Route—in 1900. The Choctaw Route was later purchased by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway Company.
