Description
This collection consists of one letter from Robert E. Lee, Washington College, Lexington, Virginia, to Thomas W. Steele, Little Rock, Arkansas, dated February 11, 1868; one farewell address, general orders, No. 9, Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, dated April 10, 1865. This copy was reprinted by the United Confederate Veterans Final Reunion, Norfolk, Virginia, dated May 30, 1951.
Biographical/Historical Note
Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) was an American Confederate general best known as commander of the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. The village of Appomattox Court House, Virginia, was the location of the surrender of the Confederate Army on April 9, 1865 which ended the Civil War. The United Confederate Veterans, UCV or Confederate Veterans, was a Civil War veterans' organization from 1889-1951. Norfolk, Virginia was settled by Europeans in 1636.
