Biographical/Historical Note
This Bible belonged to the Jefferson family of Benton and Washington counties in Arkansas. George H. Jefferson was born in Tennessee, in 1802 and married Elizabeth Moore in 1825. Elizabeth was born in 1810, and was the daughter of Samuel Moore, a veteran of the War of 1812. George and Elizabeth came to Washington County in 1835 and eventually relocated to Benton County in 1842, where George opened a hotel and a cabinet shop in Bentonville. Ten children were born to the marriage, including Samuel Allen Jefferson. Samuel Jefferson married Joan Neal in 1862 and the couple had eleven children. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, enlisting in 1861 with Company B of the First Arkansas Cavalry, Arkansas State Troops. While serving, Jefferson was wounded in the Battle of Wilson's Creek. He later joined Company G of Gordon's Arkansas Cavalry Regiment.
