This collection contains two McIlroy Banking Company checks written by James Hayden Van Hoose between 1887 and 1894

Biographical/Historical Note

James Hayden Van Hoose was born near Paintsville, Kentucky January 8, 1830 to John and Lydia Lewis Van Hoose. The Van Hoose family came to Arkansas in either May or June 1839 and settled in White River Township in Washington County. James attended the Ozark Institute and in 1852 moved to Fayetteville Arkansas where he clerked for James Sutton. When Sutton’s business closed, Van Hoose went into the mercantile business with William McIlroy, a partnership that lasted until 1881. He was elected mayor of Fayetteville in 1880 and again in 1888. He was also elected as a representative in the Arkansas General Assembly in 1896. Van Hoose died on May 6, 1900 after suffering a gunshot wound while hunting. Van Hoose married Melinda McIlroy, William McIlroy’s only daughter on August 9, 1855. Melinda died in September 1864. He married Martha W. Skelton on June 13, 1869. Neither marriage produced any children.
