Description

This collection contains two photocopies of broadsides advertising lectures to benefit the Far West Seminary.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Far West Seminary was a planned collegiate-level educational institution in northwest Arkansas, which never opened. It was chartered in 1844; however, the brick building that was to house the school burned before its completion in 1845. It played an important role in education for Arkansas because many people involved in its planning also opened other educational institutions in the state. Board member Robert W. Mecklin established his own primary school at Mount Comfort in Washington County. He also opened a school called Ozark Institute. Also, one of Mecklin's assistants, Reverend Robert Graham, founded Arkansas College in Fayetteville in 1852.
