Description
This collection contains Arkansas Militia Special Orders Number 44, dated October 7, 1874.
Biographical/Historical Note
The Arkansas Militia was established when Arkansas became a territory in 1819. Territorial Governor George Izard strengthened the militia during the Indian removal, since Arkansas was a corridor to Indian Territory. The militia was disbanded in southern states after the Civil War by an act of Congress. In 1868, Governor Powell Clayton organized a new state militia to combat the rise of the Ku Klux Klan.
