This account book is from the Pernot Drug Store in Van Buren, Arkansas.

Biographical/Historical Note

Henri Charles Pernot was born in France in 1820. He studied medicine in Paris and then moved to America in about 1847, where he attended St. Louis Medical College. Pernot married Emilie Annie Sargeant in 1851, and a year later they moved to Van Buren, Arkansas, where Pernot became the president of Crawford County Medical Association. During the Civil War, he was Chief Surgeon at the Confederate hospital until ordered to leave the city by the occupying Union Army. Pernot returned to Van Buren after the war and resumed his practice. He died January 8, 1881.
