Biographical/Historical Note

Passed by the United States Congress, the Swamp Lands Act of 1850 enabled Arkansas to build levees to reclaim swamp land and overflowed land for agricultural use. It also allowed for the sale of federally owned swamp land in Arkansas to private owners, but only if the land was then drained and used for agricultural or commercial purposes. In 1851, the Arkansas General Assembly passed legislation allowing anyone owning land next to swamp land the ability to obtain title to the swamp land.
