Comments
I have worked at the Arkansas State Archives for 14 years and the County and City Record Surveys are some of the earliest information we have on the state of county records in Arkansas. John Hugh Reynolds, born January 3, 1869, was president of Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. He was instrumental in the creation of the Arkansas State Archives in 1905. In 1906, Reynolds conducted a survey on the state of county and city records in Arkansas. This is one of the many county record surveys to be turned in. Its importance over the others is under Question 3, which asks "What records are missing? Date; if destroyed by fire or war, state the facts." The records of Marion County were destroyed during the Civil War, when the Courthouse was destroyed and some records were carried away by Federal soldiers and never returned. - Jane Wilkerson
