Description
This is a $5,000 bond posted by James M. Kuykendall upon his election as Sheriff of Lawrence County in 1830.
Biographical/Historical Note
James M. Kuykendall was elected sheriff of Lawrence County in 1830. Because the sheriff is tasked with keeping the peace and needs to be not only impartial, but also free from corruption, the bond required to take office was set very high. The $5,000 bond Kuykendall had to sign in 1830 would be approximately worth $130,000 in 2015.
Transcription
Know all men by these presents
that we James M. Kuykendall, William
Black, Thomas Black, Fielding Stubblefield
Coleman Stubblefield are held and
firmly bound unto John Pope, Governor
of the Territory of Arkansas in the
penal sum of five thousand dollars, the
payment of which well and truly to
be made, we bind ourselves, and heirs
executors administrators and assigns
as witness our hands and seals the
sixth day of July in the year of
our Lord one thousand eight hundred
and thirty.
The condition of the above
obligation is such that whereas the
aforesaid James M. Kuykendall
has been duly elected Sheriff, in and
for the County of Lawrence for the
term of two years. Now therefore if
the said James M. Kuykendall shall
do and perform all the duties of Sheriff
of the county according to law then
this obligation to be void and of none
effect otherwise to remain in full
force and virtue.

Territory of Arkansas, County of Lawrence
On the sixth day
of July AD 1830 the foregoing
bond was filed in the Clerks office
which is now duly recorded in Book
D pages 147 and 148 as witness my hand
and seal this 13th July AD 1830
