Description
This is a penal bond of two thousand dollars for Charles Hatcher to operate as surveyor for Lawrence County, with William Black, Isaac Job, and Thomas Black as securities.
Biographical/Historical Note
Land surveys were a constant challenge and need in Arkansas Territory as they were important for establishing locations of towns, family property, and political boundaries. With the United States acquiring vast amounts of land and wanting to use it as payment for the military, surveyors were counted on to provide accurate maps and usable land options. The cost of this bond is two thousand dollars to be paid if Charles Hatcher fails to do his duties, a further sign of the importance placed upon this job.
