Clay County was established in 1873 from parts of Randolph and Greene counties. Originally called “Clayton,” the name was shortened in 1875 to “Clay” in honor of Kentucky senator Henry Clay. Piggott and Corning serve as county seats in a county that is surrounded on two sides by Arkansas and two sides by Missouri.
