Arkansas County was established in 1813 as the southernmost portion of Missouri Territory and was one of the five counties in existence when Arkansas Territory was created in 1819. The name “Arkansas” is based on an Algonkian name for the local Kappa, or Quapaw, people and means “people of the south wind” or “downstream people.” DeWitt and Stuttgart serve as county seats.
