Biographical/Historical Note

It was formed on December 13, 1813, when the area was part of the Missouri Territory. It was named after the Arkansas River, which was named after the Arkansas Tribe, as was the Arkansas Territory. It later was split off from the Missouri Territory and admitted to the union as a state. It has two county seats, DeWitt and Stuttgart.
