Arkansas Territory was established on March 2, 1819, following Missouri’s petition for statehood. The territory existed until it became a state on June 15, 1836. The territorial capital was established at Arkansas Post, but moved to Little Rock in 1821. James Miller served as the first governor and Robert Crittenden as the first secretary of the territory. On November 20, 1819, Crittenden held elections to create a general assembly, which first convened in February 1820.
