On July 4, 1819, Arkansas Territory was created. Arkansas Post served as the first territorial capital until the capital was moved to Little Rock in 1821. In 1836 Arkansas Territory was admitted to the Union as the state of Arkansas.
This collection contains two letterbooks of correspondence, petitions, and other official materials of the Territory of Arkansas. Also included is an address by Governor George Izard, second territorial governor, to the members of the legislature.
