This file has the Purple Heart certificate awarded to Robert J. Swindle for brave actions as a pilot during World War II.
Biographical/Historical Note
Robert J. Swindle was a resident of Walnut Ridge, AR until he enlisted in the Army in 1940. By 1942, Swindle was a staff sergeant and had earned his pilot status. He was stationed in England and awarded the air medal for his actions on several missions. Following a bombing raid on German submarine bases in France, Swindle was shot down over the Bay of Biscay on January 23, 1943. At the time he was listed as missing in action, but one year later Swindle was re-listed as killed in action and posthumously awarded a Purple Heart for valorous actions.
