This collection consists of 82 coroner's inquests dating from 1831 to 1950, with the majority of the records dating from the 1880s and 1890s. Of the 82 inquests, 19 are for unidentified persons. Two of those are for unidentified African Americans.
Biographical/Historical Note
This collection of coroner's inquests is part of a larger group of Lawrence County records donated by the Lawrence County Historical Society in 2010. Coroner's inquests are investigations into the cause of death of those who die of unanticipated causes. This may include accidents, murders, drownings, and other causes. Most of the inquests from this collection date from the 1880s and 1890s.
