Description
This collection contains Lawrence County tax receipt ledgers from the Walnut Ridge courthouse holdings. They include all taxes assessed, including personal property, real estate, poll, county, city, and school taxes. Some differentiate taxes paid by race.
Biographical/Historical Note
Lawrence County, known as the "Mother of Counties," was established in 1815 as part of the Missouri Territory. It predates the Territory of Arkansas, which was not created until 1819, and included parts of Missouri and Oklahoma. The county was one of the five original counties of Arkansas Territory.
