This map shows Crawford County and the area around Van Buren in Township 8 North, Range 32 West, and Township 9 North, Range 31 West, in 1838. It includes the Arkansas River, Bluff Mountain, various creeks, and various bodies of water. It also includes nearby towns, a ferry crossing, Fort Smith, and various properties. Existing and contemplated roads are also on the map, including the road to Fort Gibson and the possible route of a road to Fayetteville.

Biographical/Historical Note

This map of roads and proposed roads, centering on the area between Van Buren and Fort Smith in 1838, was used in the U.S. Senate during the second session of the 25th Congress, where. One bill was proposed to make appropriations for the completion of military roads in Arkansas, including $35,000 to complete the road from Columbia through Little Rock to Fort Gibson. During the same session, Senator Fulton introduced a bill (S. 317) “to authorize the inhabitants of township eight north, range thirty-two west, in the State of Arkansas, to enter a section of land in lieu of the sixteenth section in said township, upon condition that the same is surrendered to the United States for military purposes. In exchange, the new land for the inhabitants outlined in the bill was one section, divided into quarter sections, from the Fayetteville land district.
