Description

Lithographic engraving from a book by Henry R. Schoolcraft called "Journal of a Tour into the Interior of Missouri and Arkansaw." The engraving depicts an encounter with a rattlesnake on the banks of the Ohio River.

Biographical/Historical Note

Henry R. Schoolcraft was born in New York in 1793. In 1818 and 1819, he and Levi Pettibone explored southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas. In 1821, Schoolcraft published a book about their experiences called Journal of a Tour into the Interior of Missouri and Arkansaw.
