Transcription
January 29, 1889 John M. Clayton assassinated in Plummerville while engaged in election contest after his defeat for Congress.

Clay County was originally named Clayton in honor of John M. Clayton. The "ton" was dropped by the Legislature of 1875. W. J. Lemke.
