This collection contains a requisition for ordnance and ordnance stores, for a company of Pope County Militia under Captain James F. Clear.
Biographical/Historical Note
This requisition was for ordnance and ordnance stores for a company of Pope County Militia under the command of Captain James F. Clear. James was a Union soldier during the Civil War and was dismissed from service on October 15, 1864. He later became a Captain in the Pope County Militia. Pope County’s loyalty was largely divided during the Civil War and conflict rose between the two sides during Reconstruction. These conflicts included assassinations of Pope County officials leading into the Pope County Militia War.
