Description
This collection contains special, general, and circular orders for the Arkansas State Militia, dating from 1875 to 1877.
Biographical/Historical Note
The Arkansas State Militia was used after the Civil War to keep order amidst the political wars and family feuds that ravaged the state. One such conflict was the Waldron War in Scott County, which lasted throughout the entire 1870s. Violence escalated in 1876, and almost the entire business district in Waldron was burned by arsonists. Governor William Read Miller appointed James M. Pomeroy Adjutant General in 1877, giving him the task of bringing order to the state. Pomeroy moved to Waldron in 1878, and placed a detachment of militia nearby, which helped regain the peace. Miller and Pomeroy were not liked by the people of Scott County, and the conflict contributed to the General Assembly's elimination of the Adjutant General's office in 1879. It was reinstated in 1909.
