Description

This letter was written by Henry Knox, Secretary of War, to Captain Jonathan Haskell concerning the recruitment and readiness of troops in the Massachusetts Militia.

Biographical/Historical Note

Henry Knox (1750–1806) was a military officer of the Continental Army and later the United States Army, and also served as the first United States Secretary of War. Jonathan Haskell was born in Massachusetts. He enlisted in the 14th Massachusetts Militia on January13, 1777, and was honorably discharged on November 1, 1796. He died December 13, 1814. I.B. Lawton, Haskell's great-grandson, moved to Benton County, Arkansas, in 1880, where he served as county judge. E.A.. Walker, Lawton's great-grandson, donated the letter.
